Seafarers' Training Berths in Ritman University, Dec. 16


Ritman University is hosting the 2020 Eastern Zonal NIMASA STCW Training Programme for Seafarers.


Vice Chancellor Celestine Ntuen says the university is ready to welcome the seafarers from several states in the South-South and South-East of Nigeria during the training which holds from Wednesday 16 to Sunday 20 December, 2020 at Hall 119, Godswill Akpabio block in Ritman University, Umuahia Road, Ikot Ekpene, Akwa Ibom State, Nigeria.


The training is a mandatory requirement for trainees aspiring to work on board ships and is facilitated by Joemarine Institute of Nautical Studies & Research for the regulatory body and sponsor, NIMASA (Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency). Seafarers on completion of the training will be recertified and qualified to practice in that field for another five years.


The course delivery covers the scope, principles and fundamentals for working on board, Irrespective of the present area of specialization. STCW which means Standards of Training, Certification and Watch-keeping is a mandatory training programme that will provide trainees with basic safety knowledge and instructions/information required to work on board. Participants will gain knowledge in Personnel Survival Technique (PST) and standard of competence in survival at sea in the event of ship abandonment, fire and medical emergencies, as well as fire fighting and fire prevention. They will also learn to take immediate actions upon encountering an accident or other medical emergency and compliance with personal safety social responsibilities on board ship.
